Replacing Doors vs. Kitchen remodel 2.0

In this post we'll get right down to the real costs associated with replacing doors vs what it costs to replace all of your cabinets

In our last post, we explained what it actually costs to build a cabinet from scratch and the cost of 2 Shaker style doors compared to purchasing a Chinese RTA cabinet from a popular online source. The RTA cabinet was a little more than $20 more than if you bought all of the material from a local big Box Store and the doors from us.  Considering that both cabinets must be assembled, we thought that this was a fair assessment.  The only difference is that the RTA cabinet comes painted white while you would have to paint the cabinet you built and doors you purchased from us, so the total cost is about the same.

But what if you don't need new cabinets?  What if your cabinets are in pretty decent shape but just look outdated?  This is where DIY-Cabinet Doors shines.  With a RTA cabinet, you're paying for the entire cabinet, plus you have to tear out and dispose of your old cabinet and then install your new one.  That also means that you have to remove your counter tops after disconnecting the sink, dishwasher and garbage disposal.  With replacement doors and drawer fronts from DIY Cabinet Doors, you simply unscrew the hinges from the old door and replace with your new door.  Instead of taking weeks, or even months with RTA cabinets, since they are notorious for being out of stock, you can replace your doors and drawer fronts in a few hours.

So how much does it cost?  Let's find out!

We'll use a 10x10 kitchen that cabinet companies commonly use as a way to price cabinets, so we'll use the same.
A 10x10 kitchen consists of 18 doors and 5 drawers.

A popular online distributor of Chinese import RTA cabinets shows that a 10x10 kitchen costs $2711.78.  I chose Missouri as the destination as it is centrally located.  Sales Tax is $161.36 and they offer free shipping (yeah right - we'll discuss that gimmick in another Post) on all orders over $2400.

Now, lets price just the doors and drawer fronts in our Shaker Paint Grade series to see how much it actually costs to replace just the doors and drawer fronts versus the entire kitchen.  We'll have them Bored for hinges so it's realistic.
I put the list together in a spreadsheet so that I could easily verify what I needed and what I had in my cart.  It's a good idea to create a detailed list and double check your shopping cart before placing your order.
Our list shows all of the items and their sizes for easy verification as we add the items to our cart.

I added the totals as I went along on the spreadsheet so that I could double check the prices I had versus the shopping cart just in case I missed an item or selected the wrong size.
Below you can see the total, including shipping, right to your door.  Sales tax is not collected on this order because Missouri is not a Sales Tax Nexus for us and we are not required to collect it.

Worth noting is that the W1230 cabinet from the RTA source is Out of Stock.  This is common with Chinese RTA cabinets and one of the most frustrating parts about using those products.  In this example it's a wall cabinet that can be installed later, when it comes back in stock, which can range from a few days to up to 3 months due to the production time and travel time that it takes for products to arrive from China.  Imagine if this were a base cabinet... you can't install your counter tops without all of your base cabinets.  I'm sure that would make the entire household happy, not having a kitchen sink for a couple months - it happens.

The delivered price for a new set of kitchen cabinets, that you still have to assemble and install, is $2,873.14 from this distributor.  Our replacement doors and drawer fronts are $850.53 delivered and you never have to worry about a product being out of stock because we build everything right here in the U.S.  We also let you choose the shipping that's right for you and you see what ti costs.  We don't pad our prices in order to offer "Free Shipping", we show you exactly what it's going to cost, real time.  Our Shipping Calculator uses up to the minute shipping rates so you know exactly what it's going to cost.

One other thing to consider when comparing these two is that the new cabinets require professional installation, which costs money.  You'll also need to replace your countertops, which requires a new sink, which requires a new faucet...  If you're lucky enough to have the exact same size cabinets going in as you had come out, you can get away with not replacing your flooring but odds are your new kitchen cabinets will not go in the exact same spot which means your flooring also has to be replaced.

I thinks it's easy to see how a kitchen remodel can easily cost upwards of $5,000 to $10,000 for a small kitchen like the one used in the example once you add in the cost of installation, countertops, sink, faucet, garbage disposal and flooring, not to mention your sanity hoping that all of your cabinets arrive on time and undamaged.  Imagine waiting a month for a back ordered cabinet so that you can finally put that flip house on the market only to find out that it has been damaged in transit and needs to be replaced again...  It's happened.

Our doors usually ship in 5-7 business days from the day you order and if you receive a damaged door, we'll replace it for free and expedite it to you.

I hope that this helps paint a clearer picture of the real cost differences and the advantages of replacing your cabinet doors and drawer fronts versus using one of those Chinese RTA cabinet sources that all buy from the same importer.
